Japanese MD who loves family and kendo

by onizukamasa

Dull hours are growing.

<2.10.2007> I visited UI Kumdo club. http://www.uiowa.edu/~kumdo/index.html
Though I knew this club's activity since I came here, I hesitated to visit there as I did not want to get me involved in the confliction between Korean Kumdo and Kendo. I found some difference between them today but very little.
The first is Ki-ai. of course they call Korean when hitting Men or Kote. The second is no Son-kyo. Just bow with standing. I think the bow standing is good without Son-kyo because kendo should be developed worldwide. Some foreiners do not like sitting position due to knee problems.
The third is Tasuki and flag. We must use white and red but they use blue and red. That is it. Amazing that they do Kata with Kiai, Yah and Tou.

I ordered Shinai to a member at the club and will ask my family in Japan to send me bogu, arms. I am very happy to find the place and people for Kendo pracitce. I will attempt to remember some Korean words step by step.

I printed a photo of my kendo on a T Shirt as below. If you are interested in it, please access and get it. www.cafepress.com/taichan
It might be a good present for a foreign kendo player?

<5.28.2006> The Bridges of Madison Country

When I hear Iowa, I always remember the movie, “The Bridges of Madison Country”. This Tuesday I made an interview at University of Iowa and returned to Japan this Thursday. Unfortunately, I was not able to visit the the Madison bridge due to the tight schedule. However, I watched the red bridge on the screen at Prometric test center, Penn Plaza, NYC when I took USMLE step 3. This means the image to adjust the color and structural outline on the screen. Anyway, I hope I will visit the bridge next time if I get the job there. I was amazed to see the peaceful environment around the University of Iowa as I had imagined the unsafe atmosphere around the University of Miami, medical campus. No wonder Iowa city is one of the safest cities in USA. Does anyone know there is a kendo dojo in Iowa? That is my last concern while I live there.

<3.21.2006> I want to visit Cuba after Castro's era.

I watched the World Baseball Classic final game between Japan and Cuba on TV today. The TV news said that the practice for Cuban baseball players were closed to public before today’s final. That was because the Cuban government did not let them make the opportunity when a player takes refuge during an exercise. Their life in Cuba could be poorer than we imagine. I remember that many Cuban took refuge in U.S.A. around the Cuban Revolution and the greatest town for Cuban-American is Miami. There is a Cuban town such as little Havana, and there are many Cuban emigrants as politicians, and most of successful people in business are Cubans there. As for me, I appreciate Cuban Americans in Miami because the owner of my condo was Cuban and took care of me very well and they are all good friends for me. An American cannot go to Cuba, but a Japanese can go there via Mexico. If Castro Administration collapses, I hope it will become a democratic country and it will be the country which I want to try to visit in Latin America. Unfortunately, though Castro is very old, he seems to be spiritual according to the news. All Cuban hates Castro but I think he is better than a dictator in North Korea.
